Frequently asked questions about Artificial Grass

  • Can I lay artificial grass on soil?
    • No, you must first prepare your soil with a sub base. Use sharp sand to level the area then apply a geotextile membrane. This is the key to long-lasting artificial grass, and will keep your lawn looking fresh, while stopping it from sinking.
  • Can you put fake grass on concrete?
    • We recommend installing a foam shockpad underlay over concrete before laying your artificial grass. Then, secure your underlay with gaffer tape.
  • Can you lay artificial grass on uneven ground?
    • Ideally, the surface of your ground should be even. This is because imperfections like potholes, cracks or tree roots will be highlighted by the level surface and may tear your artificial grass over time.
  • Can you put artificial grass on a balcony?
    • Yes, artificial grass is ideal for balconies because it's lightweight. You'll also want to install underlay so heavy rain can quickly and efficiently drain away.
  • Can you lay artificial grass on decking?
    • Yes, you can. Just prepare the decking with a foam underlay first. This will provide extra cushioning and protect against unforeseen tears or falls.
  • How do you clean artificial grass?
    • Once a month, use a stiff brush or flexible lawn rake to remove dust, dirt and leaves. Hose the area. Wash using an artificial grass cleaner and a long-handled brush. Rinse with a hose. Brush the grass blades upwards. Then leave to air dry.
  • Can you jet wash artificial grass?
    • If your turf is not installed over sand infill, then yes, it can be jet washed, providing you take care. A pressure washer will clean and fluff up your grass simultaneously.
  • Do you need drainage for artificial grass?
    • Some places, like balconies, do not require drainage and only need underlay. However, it all depends on your location, predicted rainfall and local water table. If in doubt, please speak to a reputable installer.
  • What is the best thickness for artificial grass?
    • This depends on your requirements. Is it for show? Will children play on it? Or, will your dog use it as a toilet? Grass fibres are measured in microns; the thicker the fibres, the longer they'll last. While the denser the fibres, the plusher your lawn will look.
  • How do you secure the edges of artificial grass?
    • There are several ways to secure the edges. You can add galvanised U-pins. Add a haunch edge using cement. For block, brick or paved edging, apply an artificial grass adhesive. Or for timber edges secure with decking screws or galvanised nails.
